MIPRO WIRELESS ON STAGE WITH MAMMOTH JACK
Superior audio quality and freedom to move on stage are key attributes
Nashville, TN – January 2009 … When they took their name
from a mule traders' ad in Western Horseman magazine, the members of
Mammoth Jack, meaning large mule, thought it the perfect name for a
group of ‘big asses’ like themselves. The characteristics
they share with their crossbred namesake are obvious: outstanding ears
for a song, a hybrid of musical influences, and a stubborn streak to
help them persevere on the crowded streets of Music City, U.S.A. Consisting
of Matt Rossi on lead vocals and acoustic guitar, Clay Davis on bass
and background vocals, Willie Van Hook on the fiddle, Tom Erwin on the
slide steel guitar, and Jim Evans on drums, this band is every bit as
busy in the studio as they are performing live, and for much of their
work, they rely on MIPRO wireless equipment—distributed in North
America by Kansas City, MO-based Avlex Corporation—to deliver
world-class audio quality and bullet proof reliability.
In addition to their forthcoming CD that has yet to be titled, which
has kept them busy in the recording studio, Mammoth Jack are seasoned
performers. The band recently completed a stint at the Orleans Casino
in Las Vegas, NV, where they provided entertainment for the 2008 National
Finals Rodeo that ran December 4-13. Other notable engagements include
the Patriot Award After Hours Ball at the JW Marriott Hotel in Washington,
DC, the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and Gilley's
in Dallas, TX.
The necessity to make a smooth transition from the stage to the studio
was a major factor that led members of Mammoth Jack to seek an effective
wireless solution to their performance challenges. “It’s
very difficult to perform live one evening and then find yourself in
the recording studio the next day,” explained Matt Rossi. “The
sound pressure levels onstage can easily create ear fatigue that compromises
one’s ability to listen accurately in the studio, and loud stage
monitors certainly didn’t help matters. This was a major factor
that led to our use of the MIPRO in-ear monitors. Secondly, we wanted
greater mobility on stage when we perform, so we were eager to try using
wireless equipment for our instruments as well.”
Recognizing the challenges the band faced, Brian Crabb, owner of Marion,
IL-based Thunder Sound and Lighting, introduced the group to MIPRO wireless
equipment. “We started with the MIPRO MI-808 true diversity in-ear
monitoring system, which includes the MI-808T transmitter and the MI-808R
receiver, coupled with the E8P earbuds,” said Crabb. “Several
members of the band loved the system and were really impressed with
the reception and audio quality. At that point, I also arranged a demo
of the MIPRO ACT-707D dual channel receiver, an ACT-707TM bodypack transmitter,
along with the MU40GX instrument cable so the musicians could feel confident
about performing without fear of dropouts.”
In no time at all, the band became enamored with MIPRO’s sound
quality and performance attributes. Ultimately, they purchased six MIPRO
MI-808 true diversity in-ear monitoring systems (one for each band member),
along with four ACT-707TM bodypack transmitters, four MU40GX instrument
cables (1/4-inch phone plug to locking mini-XLR for connection to the
bodypack transmitter), and two ACT-707D dual channel receivers to make
their instruments wireless. As the MIPRO ACT-707D is a dual channel
receiver system, two receiver units accommodate all four wireless instrument
channels. Now, Matt Rossi’s acoustic guitar, Clay Davis’
bass, Willie Van Hook’s fiddle, and lead guitar all benefit from
using MIPRO’s wireless technology—enabling these instrumentalists
to have far greater freedom of mobility on stage during performances.
“Using in-ear monitors when we play live has made a huge difference
in terms of minimizing ear fatigue,” says Rossi. “With the
MI-808, we can gig at night and still have fresh ears the next day.
This enables us to spend time recording in the studio and be able to
make critical listening decisions. The MIPRO 808 system sounds great,
the range is terrific, and it protects our hearing. Not only do we hear
better on stage, this system is a great comfort to all of us.”
Commenting on MIPRO’s performance qualities, Rossi and the entire
band are very enthusiastic. “The entire MIPRO wireless setup has
been great and easy to use,” Rossi said. “Locating available
frequencies is as simple as pushing the Scan button on the ACT-707D.
The receiver locates a clear channel and then we just align the transmitter
to match by pushing the ACT (Automatic Channel Targeting) button. The
entire setup sounds terrific and we haven’t experienced a single
dropout since we started using this gear. Bottom line—this equipment
rocks.”
